A BEMS can help to gain full control of energy usage, with an impactable reduction of utility costs and carbon footprint.
Buildings are one of the primary sources of energy consumption in the entire world. According to the IEA, in the EU, it represents about 30% of total EU energy consumption and between 25 and 40% in OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries.
About 35% of existing buildings are over 50 years old, and almost 75% are inefficient from an energy perspective. Managing energy buildings intelligently with a BEMS can have considerable benefits:
- Increased energy efficiency
- Improved environmental conditions
- More efficient use of the space
- Enhanced security and other emergency procedures
- Improved management of the building
- Reduction of carbon emissions
Investments in the energy efficiency of the industrial sector in Italy
According to the “Digital Energy Efficiency Report” of Politecnico di Milano, the investments made for energy efficiency in the industrial sector in Italy in 2020 are almost € 2.1 billion.
Of these, over 90% refer to investments in hardware technologies, while about 8% of assets were made in software technologies to monitor and control production cycles’ performance.
Almost 20% of investments in hardware are addressed to interventions on the production process, following investments were made in lighting, € 240 million (12%). The assets dedicated to HVAC (+ 18% in 2020 vs. 2019) systems and compressed air systems (+ 8% in 2020 vs. 2019) are constantly growing and represent between 7% and 10% of total investments. At the end of the list, investments in refrigeration represent approximately 2% of total investments.
The Italian industry sector spent around € 168 million in 2020 for investments in software solutions for the energy efficiency of buildings. At the top of the list, there are monitoring software and sensor systems that represent 65% of the total assets.
In 2020, 61% of the companies interviewed by Politecnico di Milano made investments in IoT sensors for energy monitoring, while about 50% made investments in software for energy management.
Why adopting a BEMS?
A Building Energy Management System (BEMS) is an automated, smart solution to monitor and optimize energy-related services of commercial and industrial buildings, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and lighting.
Thanks to sophisticated IoT sensors, a BEMS can monitor the environment, collecting and storing detailed information about your building’s energy consumption.
By combining data collection with advanced analytics software, it is possible to optimize energy usage, reduce greenhouse emissions and operational costs, with an impactable reduction of carbon footprint.
A BEMS ensures that your lights, heating, air conditioning, and other appliances are switched off outside business hours. Users can set temperature rules for their heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and get alerts when their buildings consume more than average or at unusual times.
